Xi came out and said he is ready to expand the relations between the two countries and make China-France comprehensive strategic partnership more solid and dynamic in order to benefit the peoples of each respective country. Macron and Xi have both talked about the great bonds built by their citizens and how they look forward to working with one another to promote bilateral economic, cultural, and youth exchanges. The two want to expand cultural and people-to-people exchanges and continue to build on their already strong relationship in the 60 years yet to come.

Analysis – It is interesting to me that China and France have such close relation because that is not something I have ever heard about before. A democratic European country likely does not have very many common interests with a authoritarian East Asian country so it is slightly bizarre that the two have a willingness to work together. That being said, 60 years of diplomacy between the countries is impressive and I’m sure each country is seeing benefits from it. France is gaining a ton of trade because of the vast exports that China has built their economy off of and China is involved in the European scene and has a close ally in a powerful area of Europe. China is trying to be diplomatic and friendly with most powerful countries in the world right now because they want to expand their sphere of influence and a long-lasting relationship with France is definitely an example of that.

Connection to class – Something we talked about semi-recently in class is geopolitics and security. This relationship between China and France is not only a play at maintaining security through a liberal approach of creating allies but it is geopolitically sound because the two countries can benefit each other greatly through trade and favors for one another because of their different geopolitical areas. China helps France act in Eastern Asia and France can help China act in Europe and Western parts of the world though the use of their diplomacy.

Link to the article – https://news.cgtn.com/news/2024-01-27/Chinese-French-bonds-go-deeper-on-60-years-of-diplomatic-ties-1qI6XKHPt60/p.html Summary – The Chinese President Xi Jinping exchanged congratulations with the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, on the 60th year of diplomatic relations between France and China.
