Due to the persecution of Rohingya in Myanmar, there have been many Rohingya fleeing for safety. These refugees generally go to either Bangladesh or Malaysia. However, in recent years Malaysia has decided to no longer help these refugees and considers them as a border immigration issue. This has led Malaysian groups to send the refugees back or put them in detention centers. This decision to place them in detention centers has led to breakouts where not only do these refugees escape but also other nationalists escape as well. This becomes a safety issue because in this case in the effort to escape one of the refugees died. I think this is a very similar issue that the United States is facing on our Southern border. I think that it is an issue that many countries face and there is not a clear and easy way to fix it. I understand and appreciate that refugees are a huge strain on any country however, in this case by placing them in a detention center the government almost made it worse. I assume that the public is not going to be thrilled when they learn about a refugee dying escaping from the place they went to to escape. It makes me wonder if the government will try to find new ways to deal with the crisis or if they think that this death may deter others from coming to Malaysia. This is similar to the material we are learning in class because this problem is a security threat. Not only to Malaysia but the other countries that surround them. Because although refugees are not always a threat many countries do not have the means to support an influx of that many people. In this case not only did refugees escape this detention center but also nationalists, who could have been placed there because of their extremity. I think this situation, particularly the border crisis, is common for many states and does not have a clear solution.

https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/more-than-100-myanmar-migrants-flee-malaysian-detention-centre-one-dead-2024-02-02/ Recently in a Malaysian detention center, there were more than 100 refugees that escaped.
