The law is called the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) it will allow non-Muslim religious minorities from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan to seek citizenship in India. Authorities believe it will help people facing persecution. The law was passed in 2019 and caused mass protests where many people died and were arrested. However the rules for the CAA were not drawn up yet because of this and were officially announced on Monday. The ministry said there were many misconceptions about the law and the implementation of the law was delayed heavily due to Covid-19. “This act is only for those who have suffered persecution for years and have no other shelter in the world except India,” the ministry added. The ruling Communist Party of India called for state-wide protest because the law “divides the people”.

The Citizenship Amendment Act will have lasting effects on the region because it causes a divide between muslim people and India. India is already home to 204 Million Muslims which is about 11% of the entire world’s Muslim population. Many protests are due to happen in the state which will make India less secure and cause instability within the country. India has said that the goal of the Act is to protect persecuted minorities, but then why would they not include Muslim religious minorities who are persecuted in their own country such as the Ahmadis in Pakistan and the Rohingyas in Myanmar.

This relates to our international relations class because it deals with immigration and nationalism. India is attempting to help minorities from being discriminated against in other countries giving them a safe haven in India. However I believe the Act is actually meant to keep Muslims out of their country because of India’s strong Hindu ideals and beliefs. Many Muslims have been lynched by Hindu Mobs over allegations of eating beef and many Muslim businesses have been boycotted. The Indian government is heavily mixed with religion and this act could be a way to increase their religious control inside their country.

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-68538260

India’s government has announced a controversial citizenship law that has been seen as being anti-Muslim.
