Joseph Wu, who was the former defense minister, will become head of the National Security Council instead. Taiwan has been focused on bolstering their defenses against China ever since support from their diplomatic allies have lessened and they have been excluded from international organizations. The Democratic Progressive Party’s Lai won the presidency, and the Nationalist Party now holds a majority in legislature.

Taiwan’s situation has become more and more precarious as time goes on. Since their allies’ support has lessened, it begs the question, have their allies lost hope that Taiwan can stay separate from China? Taiwan seems convinced that China is going to make a move if they’re bolstering their defenses, so it can’t mean that their allies think that China won’t do anything. The US has told China that they won’t let China invade Taiwan without retribution, but is the US’ support also dwindling? Would the US deploy soldiers if China did attack? Taiwan has a lot of valuable exports that are worth fighting over, so maybe. But why would Taiwan’s allies decrease in support if their exports are so important? Do they think Taiwan’s a lost cause? Only time will tell.

With the shift in support of Taiwan, it brings into question whether the US should continue to support Taiwan the way they do currently. Liberals would likely turn to diplomacy and try to find an alternative that would benefit all parties, while realists would probably advise to put more pressure on China. Taiwan’s change in political climate could also change things, especially since they seem to be bolstering their defenses more now than they were before. Whether China makes a move or not is the biggest factor in all this.

Link to article: https://apnews.com/article/taiwan-foreign-defense-minister-china-2d304a26202a86d19d8e705e877e5055?utm_source=copy&utm_medium=share Lai Ching-te, Taiwan’s president, has appointed Lin Chia-lung as foreign minister and Wellington Koo as defense minister in reaction to the military threats that Taiwan has been facing from China.
