A 60 Minute crew was aboard a Philippine Coast Guard ship traveling with them while doing a routine mission. During this trip around four am the 60 Minute correspondent Cecilia Vega was woken up by sirens going off on the ship. It is reporting that everyone put their life jacket on and were beginning to be frantic because all they knew was that they had been hit by a Chinese Ship. The 60 Minute crew was then taken into the cabin for safety. No one knew what the Chinese were planning, so for safety the ship’s crew held clubs and prepared to try to fight off the Chinese if they were to come aboard. After some time the crew checked on the ship and found a three and a half foot hole in the hull. As the day progressed it became obvious to the crew that Chinese ships had surrounded the ship, now watching their every move. After failed negotiation attempts between the Filipinos and the Chinese, the crew ended up abounding their original mission and taking the long way to their next stop. Because of a defense treaty with the Philippines and the US, the US will have to help defend the Philippines from China.

There has been tension between not only China and the Philippines but all the countries involved in the issue of who has claim over the South China Sea. This incident has importance because it highlights how this issue may begin to turn violent and more vulgar in the future. Tension continues to grow between many different nations wanting control over the South China Sea. This incident also showcases the Chinese military’s influence or power. In recent months we have seen how China has been pushing for more power and influence among world powers.

The US has an obligation to help the Philippines, which they are already doing by doing joint exercises and help fund weapons. Biden has also met with the President of the Philippines and has insured that if war was to break out between the Philippines and China, the US would come to their aid. Russia has been alining themselves with China but having the Philippines and China have more violent incidents would not be good for them either, especially with the US getting involved.

In class there have been a couple discussions about the growing power of China and if they one day will become a threat to the US. Chine does have a good economic standing but there is always the question of whether or not China had a stronger military presence.

Link to article: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/philippines-china-sea-conflict-us-role-60-minutes/ On September 15, 2024 CBS reported on an incident with Philippine Coast Guard ships getting rammed by Chinese ships in the early morning.
