At the time of the article’s release, the investigation into the terrorist plat was still ongoing by Detachment-88, Indonesia’s anti-terrorism division, and it was not clear if the seven detainees were a part of the same terror cell. It is well known that many radicals were angry with the Pope’s visit due to the Pope visiting the Istiqlal Mosque and the Indonesian government asking television stations to keep from broadcasting the azan while a live broadcast of the Pope was playing.

About 87% of Indonesia’s population is Muslim, with Christians making up 11% of the population and Catholics being an even smaller percentage at 3% of the population. Catholics and Islam are historically adversarial, going as far back as the Crusades. While the two religions have not taken to violence in the last 20 years or so, with an upcroping of radicalized terrorist cells popping up around the world, tensions often remain high. It is the first time since 1989 that Indonesia has received a visit from the Pope, and it was a rather important event for the Catholic population. According to a Pew Research Center poll, many people from both religions in Indonesia see their religious diversity as beneficial.

The Indonesian Government appears to have taken the terrorist threat quite seriously by employing Detachment-88. At the time of the article’s release, neither the Pope nor the Vatican City said anything about the incident. It could be argued that the Indonesian Government should make a statement about the plot. Still, considering that they have launched a formal investigation, it would be in Indonesia’s best interest to wait until the investigation concludes and the Pope finishes his tour. As for the Vatican City and the Pope, I doubt that they will make any defaming statement towards the Indonesian Government, as it is not a country and would only pour more gasoline on the fire.

This entire event involves Foreign Countries, Individual Activists, Religious Conflicts, and Terrorist. The Multi-National Tour of East Asia undertaken by the Pope has the involvement of multiple countries all in a similar state of Indonesia when it comes to Religious diversity.. The individual Activist is the Pope as he makes a 12 Day Journey away from the Vatican and Western medicine amid rising health Concerns. The Religious conflict between Islam and Christianity with many who want and are able to live in peace but are disrupted by fanatic extremists who don’t represent the popular thought in Indonesia. Finally, the Terrorists group, ISIS, that the at least two of the detainees pledged allegiance to, that still has a minor influence in the world despite having been driven underground.

Link to article:https://www.straitstimes.com/asia/se-asia/indonesian-police-detain-seven-in-a-failed-plot-to-attack-pope-francis Between September 2nd and 3rd, 2024, Indonesian police detained seven people in connection to a suspected ISIS terrorist plot to kill Pope Francis on the last day of his visit to Indonesia, the first stop in a 12-day tour of Southeast Asia and the Pacific.
