The South Korean and Japanese militaries have reported North Korea test-firing multiple ballistic missiles towards their Eastern shore last Wednesday. Shortly prior to this, North Korea revealed to the world a glimpse at a secretive facility built to enrich uranium for nuclear bombs. Kim Jong Un has called for a rapid expansion of North Korea’s nuclear weapons program and most likely revealed the facility to defy the United States. According to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, North Korea fired multiple short-range missiles out of Pyongyang heading East. South Korean Joint Chiefs and Japan communicated with the United States regarding the test fire and Japan claims to have detected two missiles however they do not know the type of missile nor the distance they traveled. The Japanese Coast Guard reported that the missiles landed in waters somewhere between the Korean Peninsula and Japan. Since 2022, North Korea has been increasing and modernizing their nuclear arsenal and recent reports suggest that North Korea may be preparing to launch test nuclear strikes before the United States presidential election in hopes to influence the outcome.

The increased amount of weapons testing by North Korea towards the Eastern seaboard is concerning as this could mean that North Korea is planning an attack on the United States. North Korea has hated the United States and South Korea for a long time and the missile tests could suggest the possibility of a future attack. If there is a threat of North Korea taking over South Korea, this could possibly lead to both direct and indirect military aid from Japan and the United States. I am not sure how North Korea plans to influence the outcome of the presidential election in the United States, however the testing of nuclear devices could potentially alter the foreign policy of both presidential candidates. I would not be surprised if North Korea gains some heat from the United States and North Korea’s neighboring nations (other than China).

North Korea’s increased arsenal of nuclear weapons could lead to potential tensions with NATO, a military IGO, and the United States. North Korea and the United States have had a bad relationship for a while due to issues on human rights and nuclear devices. Because the United States is about to have a presidential election, experts believe that North Korea could test nuclear strikes in order to influence events. North Korea’s increased levels of military tests, especially missiles, could potentially be to anger the United States and other East Asian neighbors and gain some sort of increased military legitimacy. I think that if North Korea continues to showcase their nuclear arsenal or begins to trade nuclear weapons with China that this could bring in some potential heat from NATO causing a potential Cold War.
