Four days after Taiwan’s celebration of their government’s foundation, China sent 125 aircraft and other ships in areas surrounding Taiwan for a large military exercise. They simulated sealing off ports in the Taiwan Strait in punishment for Taiwan’s president refusing the claim that China has sovereignty over the island. Taiwan states it will stand firm against these offenses and outwardly demands China to stop their military provocations that threaten regional peace and Taiwan’s freedom. China again reiterates that Taiwan’s independence is fiction and that these statements will be met with counters. Taiwan prepares and watches for potential escalation, but their citizens are unfazed. Most citizens believe things are stable and they are quite used to China’s ‘military exercises’ in the region. The U.S., standing for Taiwan, responded by publicly condemning China’s actions and urged China to cease these operations.

In the past few years China has been continuously provoking Taiwan with military exercises such as these. The question is why has China been doing these things but not necessarily following through with their threats (forceful annexation of Taiwan). These threats may be China’s way to psychologically scare those who believe in Taiwan’s independence and reduce independence efforts. Perhaps China hasn’t forcefully confronted Taiwan yet because they do not want to face a conflict with the U.S.. Although, China has been building up their military strength to potentially challenge the U.S.’s influence in the region. Tensions will continue to grow because of China’s stimulating behavior, and despite unworried citizens about the conflict, the concern of if China will soon follow through becomes reasonable.

Taiwan continues to strengthen their defenses so they are ready for a possible future conflict. The U.S. could perhaps increase their military aid for Taiwan, but until China’s threat appears bigger, this seems unlikely. Neighboring allies of Taiwan like South Korea or Japan could support Taiwan militarily or simply prepare their own militaries to be prepared for a bigger regional conflict. The UN could respond by criticizing China’s actions and promote peace and diplomatic solutions to avoid escalation in the area. Since China gained Taiwan after WW2, they have felt it is their right to have sovereignty over the island and the nationalist party fleeing there and creating their own diplomatic state did not deter this feeling. China’s actions are an example of realism because it is in the country’s own interest to annex Taiwan whereas many other states do not agree with this.
