All people on board were safely evacuated, but the people who inhabit the small fishing villages are being forced to fish farther from shore, and worries are rampant. Already, the village of Siumu is decorated with British flags due to the upcoming visit of King Charles and Queen Camilla for the biennial meeting of leaders from 56 Commonwealth states, the first time a Pacific Island nation is hosting. Unfortunately, Siumu also has to deal with the environmental damage from the aforementioned ship HMNZS Manawanui, which ran aground on a reef, caught fire, and subsequently sank. While fears of an oil spill were assured, inhabitants of Siumu are still anxious for their long term survival. Fishermen are being forced to use more gas to gather seafood, following the Samoan government’s advice that fish caught around Manawanui should not be consumed. The residual oil from the ship has also worried people from surrounding villages, who have found swimmers, fish, and objects slick with diesel. Tourism has been hurt, and New Zealand and Samoa will likely have to continue to work together to solve this issue amidst the Commonwealth meeting.

Environmental damage is already a concern with Pacific Island nations, and some people living in fishing villages insist that the sunken boat is hurting their reefs. This will likely catalyze long term damage to the already fragile ecosystem. New Zealand made it a “priority” to clean up as much diesel as possible, but clearly there is still some left. Samoans from surrounding villages have been insisting that New Zealand pays for the ship, however analysis shows that a swift resolution is unlikely. With the upcoming visit of the royals, Samoa is likely anxious to make a good impression as this is the first time a Pacific Island nation is hosting the Commonwealth meeting. The controversy over Manawanui and the decline in tourism will not make that easy.

Samoa and New Zealand have been cooperating over the last couple weeks, and as of now there are no plans to remove the vessel from its resting place. However, it might be necessary given complaints from villages about diesel remnants on the ocean’s surface as well as financial consequences. It would also be necessary for officials from both countries to assist in a clean up. In class now, we are discussing realist theory. While theoretically, every country is fighting for dominance and power, states that are allies must work together in order to maintain trust. Samoa, as a small island nation, may depend on other larger countries to assist with conserving its fragile ecosystem. The reefs are vital to preserving biodiversity, and it requires a global effort that’d defy realist theory.

https://apnews.com/article/samoa-king-charles-zealand-navy-boat-sank-be10fb9b6d85ff74c25f07daaafa9198 Recently, a New Zealand vessel crashed and sank off the coast of Samoa.
