There were roughly 140 people aboard the ship with reports of there being 3 deaths during the journey. The ship had been floating in the sea for about 3 days. Local authorities had escorted 11 people to the hospital not long after the ships arrival. Upon the ships arrival locals were not happy. The fishing towns chief spoke out on the refusal to help the refugees based on recent events in the area. He spoke out on the unrest that has been going on in nearby locations as well. It went as far as a banner being put up stating, “The people of South Aceh Regency reject the arrival of Rohingya refugees in the South Aceh Regency area.”The people of South Aceh Regency reject the arrival of Rohingya refugees in the South Aceh Regency area.” After some investigation authorities have found evidence that some of the passengers had paid someone to be transported to another country. The voyage started with roughly 216 passenger but approximately 50 had disembarked in Indonesia’s Riau province, reports the local authorities. Three suspects have been arrested for people smuggling.

This event is heartbreaking to see for all sides. There are people trying to find escape prosecution but at the same time people are having to give so much up to give these people a temporary stay. This has been an ongoing issue in the area. Neighboring towns and cities have gone through their own issues when they did welcome refugees. The Chief’s action shows the lasting effects of refugees seeking new homes. There could possibly be a start of other towns or cities not allowing refugees to come on their land. These towns have started to look out for what their personal needs.

The Indonesian government has not spoken out yet but they could either make arrangements for the refugees coming in or banish them even more. The Myanmar’s “government” has had many reports of raping and killing their citizens and there are no signs of this stopping. They may start trying to create ways to keep citizens in the land. This is the period where people are just waiting for someone to make a move.

In class we are currently learning about international theories. The most recent one is realism theory, countries acting in their benefit only. The chiefs actions follow this theory because letting the refugees into their town wouldn’t have supported his town in any way. In class there have also been discussions about the spread of power. These refugees were fleeing from a state that is scrabbling for power, trying to get their own state. Power is what everyone wants and that can lead to immense backlash.

https://apnews.com/article/indonesia-aceh-rohingya-muslims-myanmar-refugees-e449e93984ea308c24efedb84be0f6e8 This past Tuesday there was a blue and white wooden ship that sailed about a mile off of the Indonesian coast.
