This has led many to suspect that North Korea could potentially join Russian forces in Ukraine, and this suggests that there are expanding military ties between North Korea and Russia due to Moscow seeking weapons and troops to gain ground in the Russia-Ukraine war. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin called the move a “next step” after North Korea provided Russia with arms and stated that Pyongyang could face consequences for aiding Russia directly. The White House national security spokesman John Kirby said that the United States believes that at least 3,000 North Korean soldiers traveled by ship to Vladivostok (Russia’s largest Pacific port), in early to mid-October. The soldiers are suspected to have then traveled to multiple Russian military training sites in eastern Russia, where they are currently undergoing training. It is unknown whether or not the new soldiers will join combat with the Russian military, however there is a likely chance they will. Kirby believes that if they are co-belligerents, their intention is to participate in the war on Russia’s behalf, which would be a very serious issue and have impacts throughout Europe and the Indo-Pacific.

I find it interesting and a little concerning that North Korea is sending troops directly to Russia. North Korea has been known to make threats and boast their nuclear arsenal; however, they typically do not really send their military out of the country. I find it a little concerning that North Korea is becoming this allied with Russia. This could potentially lead to some nuclear arms trade as well as a prolonged Russia-Ukraine war. While the war has been pretty much at a stalemate for the past two years, Russia was definitely on the losing side due to the amount of aid that Ukraine is receiving. South Korean officials are now worried that Russia may reward North Korea in helping them with fighting Ukraine by giving them sophisticated weapons technologies that could boost its nuclear and missile programs that could potentially target South Korea.

If North Korea directly aids Russia, this could lead to an expanded and more direct conflict in Russia and Ukraine. I wonder how the United States would react to this if North Korea were to have boots on the ground within Ukraine. The national security spokesman did allude to a possibility of US intervention in the war. South Korea also reported that their intel suggests that North Korea could send as many as 10,000 soldiers, as well as more than 13,000 containers of artillery, missiles, and other conventional arms to Russia to replenish Russia’s diminishing weapons stockpile. South Korea is now considering supplying weapons to Ukraine in response to the reported troop dispatch. I believe that if North Korea is really attempting to gain battle experience and help the Russians in their war against Ukraine, that South Korea and the United States might begin to directly assist Ukraine in this war.

For the sake of South Korea’s national security and interest they are going to have the incentive to send weapons to Ukraine because if Ukraine were defeated by Russia and North Korea, then North Korea could and most likely would turn that newly gained battle experience and weapon technologies toward South Korea. On the other hand, the U.S. could intervene for the same reason that South Korea fears, because of the United States’ tense relationship with North Korea. North Korea is most likely assisting the Russians due to a mutual dislike of the United States and NATO countries, as well as North Korea has one of the largest militaries in the world however one of the least functional militaries due to having no battle experience since the Korean War. Because of North Korea’s lack of functionality, they are most likely attempting to train and gain new experiences to help better their military and gain legitimacy.

Link to Article: https://apnews.com/article/north-korea-russia-troops-ukraine-b664f8c1164e9ef859b7a618ffa92140 On Wednesday, October 23rd, the United States reported that 3,000 North Korean troops have deployed to Russia and are training at several locations.
