This comes as a secondary development as the Philippines have fiercely disputed China’s claims to the entirety of the region while Indonesia has taken a softer approach in dealing with the regional power that China has been becoming. The policy adopted by the Indonesian government is an interesting tone as Indonesia seems to push itself into a more powerful position in South-East Asia. The President of Indonesia is a prime example of a bandwagon state as he has joined with Russia before and is looking to more friendly relations with China.

Personally this is another move that is attempting Indonesia to the peak of power in South-East Asia. Potentially taking this spot from the Philippines and being a more Chinese oriented power. China on the other hand could use an ally that can box in the Philippines and would want to split this region between 2 regional powers. It could be explained as Indonesia just being another bandwagon state but personally I believe these moves are to move them up the hierarchy in this region and potentially move them to the top or at least equal to China.

This relates to the idea of bandwagon states that to increase their own punching power they ally themselves with more powerful states. Indonesia has in the past been extremely friendly with Putin and Russia and now this idea of being cooperative with the Chinese in the South China Sea just highlights this idea even more so. China would also be extremely open to gaining an ally that will allow them to sway the region away from the Americans and making a larger Asian dominated coalition that would allow them to overpower western/democratic desires in the region.

Article link This article reports on the statements made by Indonesia’s new president and his stance in the South China Sea.
