This port has also signed into deal a broadening of the existing free trade agreement between Peru and China. China and Peru are attempting to revive the equivalent of the Silk Road as well as the Great Inca Trail. In an opinion article, Xi Jinping stated that the project would generate $4.5 billion in annual revenues, create more than 8,000 direct jobs and reduce the logistics costs of the Peru-China route by 20%. China is also prepared to spend billions more as they cooperate with Peru on this major shipping port connecting Asia and South America. The first shipment of products is set to sail from Chancay to China carrying cargo from Peru next week. Chinas main reason for developing this port was access to Brazil as they are attempting to create a new railway where Brazilian exports can be carried to the port. Brazilian exports include soybeans and iron ore which they export directly to China.

China is attempting to spread its dominance outside of its Asia-Pacific region and control imports and exports in South America. This new Chancay port will help China establish a foothold in South America through Peru so it can spread its influence into Brazil and other neighboring Latin American countries. China seeks soybeans and iron ore as it is the largest purchaser of these goods from Brazil. This port is to generate thousands of jobs and billions of dollars for the Chinese and Peruvians.

China is attempting to develop its soft power, its persuasive and economical force will be a large factor in the role it plays within the world. This port and the expansion of the free trade agreement between itself and Peru will promote relations between the two countries as well as Brazil and others. The U.S is concerned over the potential military use of the Chancay port as it lies within the distant backyard of America. A Chinese port near the U.S mainland will put the U.S on alert for possible Chinese military influence into South America where the U.S. has many national interests.

This past Thursday, China has opened the Chancay port north of Lima on the Pacific Ocean.
