The Rohingyas had come on a sinking boat of weak and hungry people from a refugee camp in Bangladesh. These refugees had already gone from Myanmar to Bangladesh because Rohingyas are very oppressed in Myanmar. Rohingyas are a stateless nation mainly in Myanmar. They are predominantly Islam while Myanmar is predominantly Buddhist causing a rift between groups of people. This rift has caused oppression and violence towards the Rohingya people including the denying of citizenship and a very violent campaign in 2017 where 740,000 thousand of the 1 million Rohingyas fled because of mass rapes and killings. These 116 refugees came to Indonesia after 230 other refugees in the previous 8 months. Indonesia has been asking the international community for help because of the increasing number of refugees.

I think this article is very important because it deals with the issue of human rights which is a big topic in the international community. Human rights are disputed between countries, but genocide and rape are huge taboo in the world so this will cause problems for Myanmar in the international community because most countries won’t stand for this which bleeds into other aspects of IR including military and economic alliances. This article is also important because it shows how refugees can come into countries unannounced and unnoticed at first, but they still need places to live, food to eat and water to drink which will bring the attention of the country the refugees are now in and cause focus to be turned towards helping those because they have escaped abuse of human rights.

I expect that Myanmar or Bangladesh won’t have much of a response to this event because it has happened before. I only see them getting very involved if other countries try to attack them or stop them from what they are doing, mainly Myanmar. I see Indonesia breaking off or slimming down many times that they have with Myanmar because they most likely will not want to work with a country that is doing this to people. I also see Indonesia getting the attention of foreign countries, bringing up the issue and getting countries on their side so that they can take a stronger stance against Myanmar. This connects to class because it involves a stateless nation, the Rohingya people, and how their group of people affects the international community. It also involves universal norms against genocide where there is no “international rulebook” or a single governing authority in the world, but that many countries will stand against it because it is not internationally and socially acceptable.

Link to article: https://apnews.com/article/indonesia-aceh-rohingya-refugees-771d78456b7f2245a9237e0c70da83f4 This past Saturday, 116 Rohingya refugees, mainly women and children, were saved by Indonesian fishermen.
