They declared them to be “persona non grata,” meaning without any reason. Tensions are still rising between the two due to the possible role of a Chinese ship harming undersea data cables in the Baltic Sea, however, neither foreign ministry brought up this suspicion while discussing the expulsion. China has condemned their expulsions and warned Lithuania of potential countermeasures. China and Lithuania have had tense relations going back to 2021, when Lithuania allowed Taiwan to open a representative office, going against China’s claims about Taiwan.

This event brings up a lot of geopolitical tensions, as Lithuania is continuing to stand against China’s global influence by supporting Taiwan and challenging Beijing’s global reach. The damage to these underwater data cables raises concerns about vulnerabilities and the risks that come with them. The data cables are important to the economics and security of Lithuania, and China’s noncooperation about the issue will contribute to the rising tensions.

Lithuania and Sweden should continue to investigate the issue of the severing of the cables and work to expand the protection and security of this infrastructure for the future. Lithuania could use this to gain support from alliances like the EU, as I think it is likely China will respond with countermeasures. With that being said, China should approach their response with control and avoid intense countermeasures to prevent the inclusion of alliances like the EU.

Lithuania’s decision to expel the three diplomats demonstrates the use of hard power, as this was a direct action to show their sovereignty and disapproval of China’s actions. However, Lithuania aligns themselves with democratic views and their support for Taiwan, so this also holds a form of soft power as they send a message of what they stand for as a country.

China condemns Lithuania’s expulsion of its diplomats | AP News Lithuania has expelled three Chinese diplomats without detailing who the people were or the reasoning behind the decision.
