The hacking affected at least 8 US companies, and more worldwide. The FBI, FCC, CISA, and National Security Council held a classified Senate meeting to discuss the intensity of the data breach. AT&T and Verizon did confirm limited unauthorized access, while T-Mobile and Lumen denied any data breaches. Chinese officials rejected all agitations and called them disinformation. Many senators showed their frustration as US Security agencies didn’t catch it Quickley and are holding another meeting on December 11th to discuss the best practices to counteract security risks.

This is a major security threat to government and public communication and opens the door to a lot of US and worldwide cyber vulnerabilities while highlighting Chinese capabilities. This can also lead to a drop in public trust, as this hacking was widespread throughout multiple telecommunication networks. People may start to distrust the government if they don’t take action to protect the security of the communications between citizens. I think this could lead to more communication between government and telecommunication companies as they work to prioritize privacy and cybersecurity.

The US Government could pass some kind of legislation to create stronger security systems for important cyber companies like telecommunication companies. With more coordination between government security agencies and these companies, more intelligence and cybersecurity measures could be taken. Telecommunication companies should also work to spot threats more quickly and efficiently and educate the public about the importance of individual security measures to prevent threats.

If I were to try to connect this to the theory of neorealism, I would say that these Chinese hackers are taking offensive steps through espionage to try to protect the intelligence, sovereignty, and security of their state. As the cyber world continues to grow, I think that actions like this can be seen as hard power through cyber espionage instead of the more traditional military or economic force. China’s use of its cyber tools to expose US government communications has a direct impact on the US and our national security.

US senators vow action after briefing on Chinese Salt Typhoon telecom hacking | Reuters The Salt Typhoon telecommunication hacking is a Chinese-operated cyber act to steal sensitive call data from US telecommunication companies.
