The Philippine vessels, on a routine patrol to protect Filipino fishermen, were blocked and sideswiped by the Chinese ships. Despite this, the Philippines remains resolute in its commitment to protect its fishermen and uphold its rights in the area. The U.S. strongly condemned China’s actions, calling them dangerous and unlawful, and reiterated its support for the Philippines. China’s claim over almost all of the South China Sea, which overlaps with waters claimed by several countries, including the Philippines, has led to heightened regional tensions, part of the broader U.S.-China rivalry.

This maneuver by China is going along with rising tensions in that area with the maritime laws that were just passed. China is very upset about these laws, and they are using their power to show the Philippines that they should not mess with China because they would stand much of a chance against Chinese military power. The United States is also getting included in this diplomatic problem, which could lead to China backing off because they don’t want to deal with the United States. Still, the chances of the United States using military power over this make me think China won’t stop.

You can see a sense of external image in this conflict and my other articles. In my other article, China seems friendly and helpful in ensuring they will get Maymar on their side. Making it more challenging to attack that border and natural resources. In this article, you can see how China is upset and looks like a villain to the Philippines because they are limiting trade routes and trying to take control of the South China Sea, which leaves China open to a huge navel attack, especially with the Philippines and the United States having good relations.

Link to Article:https://apnews.com/article/china-philippines-disputed-scarborough-shoal-south-china-sea-77e94f6acc69153bd7a9acc187027f9e Chinese coast guard and navy ships used water cannons and aggressive tactics against Philippine patrol vessels near Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea.
