On Saturday, February 15th the Chinese foreign minister informed the German chancellor that China would like to strengthen cooperation in terms of free trade and multilateralism with Germany and the European Union. Wang Yi, China’s foreign minister, had been in Germany to attend the annual Munich Security Conference, and spoke with France and Spain in addition to Germany. China has already had positive relations with Germany when they opposed tariffs against Chinese cars last year, but the Chinese Foreign Ministry believes China should work towards closer relations with the EU. This comes as an effort to promote positive bilateral collaboration in order to maintain global peace and stability. Additionally, both China and Europe share the common goal of peacefully resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Wang Yi urging peace talks at the Munich conference on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This article is vital in understanding global relations since it shows how China is working towards becoming a more influential power in the EU and in the entire world. The United States and China are considered the 2 most powerful countries in the world, but are both constantly competing to become the dominant power. However, China’s increasing cooperation and involvement with Germany and the European Union points towards a Chinese goal to become more dominant among Western countries, attempting to combat the American influence and supremacy that is already present among Western countries and the rest of the world. If the EU were to agree to increased collaboration, China’s global influence would increase. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since it is China that is seeking stronger cooperation with Germany and the European Union, both Germany and the EU could naturally decline to continue strengthening relations with China. This could be because they do not want to use their resources on China, but it could also be in order to prevent China from gaining influence in Western countries. Since this is a goal that has been communicated by the Chinese Foreign Ministry, it is likely that they will continue to work towards strengthening cooperation with Germany and the EU. Germany has already supported China in terms of opposing tariffs against Chinese cars last year, so it is possible they could work towards more collaboration with the Chinese government regardless of the rest of the European Union. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This effort by the Chinese government to seek stronger cooperation with Germany and the European Union can be related to the topic of national and international security. Firstly, China is naturally looking out for its own security policies, or the principles to advance a state’s fundamental interests and ensure national security. Additionally, this request impacts international security as well, since the Chinese government is looking for cooperation on multilateral levels as a result of the overlapping of national security concerns. Countries in the EU must look out for their own national security in addition to international security, as their cooperation with the Chinese government could result in an increase of Chinese influence globally. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
