However, Australia is not implementing retaliatory tariffs and is instead seeking an exemption from the tariffs – one they had been granted during the past Trump administration. Australia’s current Prime Minister has said that they will not retaliate because consumers pay the price of the tariffs. Part of Australia’s justification for the exemption is that their steel companies employ American workers – and thus, buying Australian goods is actually supporting American jobs, rather than causing unemployment.

Although the current Prime Minister has made it clear he is unhappy with the current tariffs, the upcoming elections in Australia have likely made him hesitant to worsen the economy by implementing retaliatory tariffs. Further, it’s worth noting that Australia trades with the U.S. at a deficit – they import more goods than they export. That means that a tariff on the goods they export to the U.S. is unlikely to have adverse effects significant enough to get the U.S. to roll back their tariffs. Any tariffs, then, will only harm the Australian consumer – and reflect poorly on the current administration.

Keeping those factors in mind, Australia’s response makes perfect sense. And the fact that they had previously secured an exemption bodes well for securing another one now. Additionally, if the production of Australian steel and aluminum actually benefits American industry, businesses are sure to lobby the president and Congress to grant Australia an exemption – a request that Trump is likely to listen to.

These U.S. tariffs imposed almost indiscriminately on foreign countries are indicative of a larger shift in America towards psuedo-isolationism, where we are looking to withdrawal from many of our commitments across the world that don’t benefit the U.S. This means a great amount of stress may be put on our relationships with other countries as we contribute less and less, but there is a clear argument to be made about prioritizing national interest over liberal ideals – alliances are fluid and countries are not friends, a state has to put itself first.

Link to article: https://apnews.com/article/australia-tariffs-steel-aluminum-exemption-fe8ad2239a20c65d42c9249c05ae9303 Australia is one of many countries that have been impacted by U.S. tariffs – in their case, on steel and aluminum.
