As reported this morning by Reuters the Chinese military has organized and executed drills off the North, South and eastern coasts of Taiwan as a “stern warning” by the government in Beijing against Taiwanese separatism and has reportedly come out in a statement calling the president of Taiwan, Lai Ching-te, a “parasite” as Taiwan responded by deploying warships near to the Chinese military drills. These drills are coming in clear difference to what happened similarly last year given that the Chinese government has not declared them “war games” and instead remains vigilant that the drills were militarily in their origin and purpose. This comes as a result of the U.S Secretary of Defense visited Taiwan last month, heavily criticizing the Chinese government in Beijing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is reported by China’s Eastern Theatre Command that Chinese deployments included artillery, aircraft and warships to practice the idea of blockading the island, whilst also maintaining the ability to strike ground and maritime targets across the island and its coasts. Beijing reiterated its belief that Taiwan is a separatist government and that Taiwan is a core territory of the People’s Republic of China in the statement made by the Chinese Eastern Theatre Command this morning. An estimated 13 warships and 71 aircraft were involved in the drills, with Taiwan being forced to respond due to the proximity of which the Chinese military forces neared to Taiwanese maritime waters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is extremely important given how China, Japan and Korea have come out in a joint statement and consensus of how they will respond to newly introduced tariffs under the Trump administration, and could leverage a swing of the United States’s Asia-Pacific allies towards that of aligning with Beijing, jeopardizing the security and sovereignty of Taiwan. However, with the recent visit of the Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, to Taiwan in the recent weeks, it remains vigilant that the United States is strong in its support of Taiwan and its sovereignty against Chinese “troublemaking” as the Taiwanese government put it so kindly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As for how Taiwan will respond in the future, I think it’s likely militarization efforts continue and that the Taiwanese military will be forced to respond more proactively to Chinese threats, especially given the proximity they reached to Taiwan’s national waters and the coast as a result. As for how China or the US will respond as a result, it looks as if China is increasingly going to expand its efforts to critically jeopardize the sovereignty of Taiwan through military drills and practice operations both to show off its military capabilities, and for the planning of what is believed to be an eventual invasion of the island. The United States and its State Dept. or Dept. of Defense have not yet held a press conference or meeting to announce their critizations of the action or their response–and thus remain silent. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
