The recent launch of large-scale military drills by China surrounding Taiwan has sparked significant concern and tension in the region. The Chinese military has issued a ‘severe warning’, stating that the exercises are a “solemn warning to external forces” and a demonstration of China’s “firm determination and strong ability to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity”.

The military drills, which include naval, air, and land forces, are being conducted in the Taiwan Strait and surrounding areas. China’s military has also announced that the exercises will include live-fire drills, which have been described as a “serious provocation” by Taiwan’s government.

The timing of these military drills is significant as they’re being performed amidst rising tensions between China and Taiwan. China has long considered Taiwan to be a part of its territory, and has been increasing pressure on the island to accept its “one country, two systems” framework. Taiwan, on the other hand, has been seeking to assert its independence and sovereignty, which has led to a deterioration in relations between the two sides.

The Chinese government’s decision to launch these military drills is seen as an attempt to intimidate Taiwan and demonstrate its military capabilities. The severe warning issued by China’s military is also a clear indication that Beijing is willing to take a tough, militaristic stance on the issue of Taiwan.

The international community has been watching these developments with concern. The United States, in particular, has been critical of China’s actions, with the State Department issuing a statement calling on China to “cease its military, diplomatic, and economic pressure against Taiwan”.

The launch of large-scale military drills by China around Taiwan is a significant development that has major implications for regional stability and security. In class, we are discussing security, global and domestic. The Chinese government’s decision to conduct these drills is a clear indication of its determination to assert its claims over Taiwan, threatening their national sovereignty. The United States, being one of China’s biggest “enemies” is committed to stopping China’s aggressive actions against Taiwan.
