South Korea now must hold an election to choose his successor within 60 days. Yoon, who was a member of South Korea’s People Power Party, has created a divide within the party, which is projected to shape the nomination of their new candidate and the results of the upcoming election. The Democratic Party will likely nominate opposition leader Lee Jae-myung, who is currently facing five ongoing trials for crimes such as corruption.

The impeachment of Yoon, as mentioned above, has divided his party into pro-Yoon loyalists who believe his impeachment was unjust, and anti-Yoon reformists, who have been critical of some of Yoon’s more radical decisions. This does not bode well for their chances in winning the election to begin with, but they also only have so much time to settle on a new candidate. Taking these factors into consideration, it’s likely that the Democratic Party will win the election in June – Lee only lost by a small margin in the previous election, after all. If he does win, he will be inheriting a more united government than Yoon, as the South Korean parliament is currently controlled by Lee’s party.

The leadership of South Korea will have an impact on the country’s foreign policy and, by extension, their relationship with other states. One of the more relevant issues to address for South Korea is its relationship with the U.S. under the new administration. How the country responds to U.S. tariffs and U.S. initiatives to pull back from international obligations will shape the region’s future. Any decision to weaken ties with the U.S. will reshape the political dynamics of the region and likely allow China more opportunity to flourish as a regional power.

In the absence of an international governing body, states are tasked with counterbalancing actions of other states that they disagree with by utilizing some form of coercive power. This makes the leadership of any given country not just essential to the function of its own government, but essential to the well-being of the international community. On the other hand, this also means that ill-conceived decisions of one country’s ruler may be counteracted by the decisions of other countries – assuming these other countries have both a vested interest in a conflict and the power to exert their own influence.

Link to article: https://apnews.com/article/south-korea-election-date-03a4e56b7aa98db9e18bad5ab66762cb Following up on my previous article – which discussed the initial motion to impeach Yoon Suk Yeol after he briefly attempted to impose martial law – the Constitutional Court has now issued its unanimous decision to impeach Yoon.
