North Korea and Russia have begun the construction of the first road bridge to connect the two countries over their shared river border. This is a huge advancement for North Korea as it gives them an easier route to trade with Russia. In 2023, 97% of North Korea’s trade was with China. This is risky for North Korea because it is heavily dependent on one country, so North Korea has been strengthening its ties with Russia as well. The two countries\u2019 officials have stated that this is just the beginning of increased bilateral ties between them. The initiation of this deal could be connected to North Korea’s aid in Russia’s war against Ukraine, as North Korea sent at least 15,000 soldiers to the Russian frontlines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since Putin came into power, Russia has increased its relations with North Korea. Despite this, trade between the two countries has remained minimal in the past few years—Russia accounted for only 1.2% of North Korea\u2019s trade in 2023. However, North Korea has recently begun selling Russia weapons and war supplies, increasing that number. This is beneficial to North Korea as it boosts their economy and reduces their dependence on China. For Russia, this partnership is beneficial because their military and economy have been struggling to keep up with the continuation of the war in Ukraine. By offering a quicker and easier mode of transportation, the road bridge will likely foster further collaboration between North Korea and Russia. This trade route, being the first of its kind in its location, could spark a major change for both countries involved. North Korea\u2019s trade with Russia will likely increase exponentially, improving its economy and reducing its dependence on China. The North Korean economy may shift towards manufacturing weapons to export. Russia will likely push harder in its war on Ukraine, as it will have more supplies to do so. However, because of the impact of the war on the Russian economy, this change may be short lived, and North Korea may suffer consequences if it increases trade with Russia. Russia is not a stable trading partner at the moment due to its potential economic collapse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine is widely considered to be a violation of international law because it is an act of aggression. Acts of aggression, such as invasions, are considered illegal under international law because they are an unnecessary use of force that directly violates another state\u2019s sovereignty. By offering troops and war supplies to Russia, North Korea is also considered to be in violation of international law.
