This unexpected turn of events showcases Duterte’s enduring influence in the city, where he previously served as mayor and later as president of the Philippines.

Duterte’s win highlights his lasting impact on Philippine politics. His populist and nationalist policies resonated with many Filipinos, particularly in Davao City, where he implemented significant reforms and infrastructure projects. Although his presidency was marked by controversy, including allegations of human rights abuses and extrajudicial killings, his supporters see him as a strong leader who tackled crime and corruption. Clearly, due to the results of the election, the people want him to return and liked him as a leader. It is uncertain what will come of these events. I wonder if he’ll be released or will it cause conflict with the Philippines.

Duterte’s detention at the ICC adds complexity to his mayoral win. The ICC has been investigating Duterte’s war on drugs, which has resulted in thousands of deaths. While his detention might raise questions about his ability to effectively govern Davao City, it’s unclear how this will impact his mayoral duties. However, the people of the Philippines seem to clearly want him to return and be apart of their (local) government. So it makes a very complex situation.

Duterte’s victory may have implications for Philippine politics, particularly in the context of his family’s political dynasty. His daughter, Sara Duterte, currently serves as vice president. Rodrigo Duterte’s win could further solidify their family’s grip on power in the city and potentially influence national politics. Overall, Duterte’s resounding victory in Davao City demonstrates his continued influence in Philippine politics, despite the challenges he faces.

Link to article: https://www.npr.org/2025/05/14/g-s1-66534/detained-philippines-ex-president-duterte-wins-mayoral-race-in-his-home-city Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has secured a landslide victory in the mayoral race in his hometown of Davao City, despite being detained at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague; I did a story on this during the past couple regional reports.
