Thailand and Cambodia have had long-term disputes over land between the two countries because of the land’s significance to sparking nationalism. The Thais and Cambodians have been ceasing fire since July with injured Thai soldiers and captured Cambodian soldiers. This dispute has led to boycotts on Thai products, which are being posted all over social media. To follow these posts against Thailand’s products, businesses are losing sales because no one is buying items anymore. Not only are there social media attacks towards Thailand, but there are also posts going around about discoveries on illegal Cambodian workers.

I chose this article because I thought it was interesting how social media connects to world disputes and how much it impacts relationships world wide. As social media is full of trends, content, and opinions that many people scroll through or view every day, it can easily share information and opinions about political and world situations like this one. Even though this dispute is simply over land, I wonder what else is involved in the situation that guided these ceasefires and especially the decision to boycott Thailand’s goods and products.

Each stockholder has already responded in different ways as the Cambodians have started boycotts against Thai products on social media. In return for these boycotts and losing business, Thai businesses have decided to cover up barcodes on their products, so customers do not know who made the items they’re buying. The Thais attacked migrant workers in Cambodia after seeing social media posts that influenced the attacks. The new Thai Prime minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Manet are now starting to focus on building back mutual trust and normalcy between their countries.

This situation relates to class because resources are a major global challenge and the way states and governments handle these compromises and needs are either making deals and alliances or starting a negative international relationship, which is exactly what is going on with Cambodia and Thailand.

Link to article: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cy9x91ewzvxo This article brings up the impactful role of social media on world relationships and conflicts.
