The alleged violated is related specifically to Nvidia’s limited approval in China for the acquisition of Mellanox Technologies in a deal worth $6.9 Billion USD. The deal had a number of conditions attached to its approval, and regulators say that the conditional expectations were not met by the company. The investigation was initially opened in December 2024, and the more recent announcement made by China is a continuance of the original investigation into the company and its operations.

China has revealed that it may impose penalties under its antitrust law if the violations are confirmed true, Nvidia could be fined up to 10% on its annual sales under Chinese law. Nvidia disputes any wrongdoing on their behalf, saying it has complied with its legal commitments to the Chinese government and its cooperating with regulators sent by the government. CBS reports that China’s investigation into Nvidia is the “latest retaliation in a in a battle between the US and China over the semiconductor chip market.”

The Chinese government is increasingly aware of US control over technology and the development of artificial intelligence. The monopoly claim made by the Chinese government is likely a move to take back some of the control aforementioned.

This issue relates directly to soft power because Nvidia is a US-based company with most of its holdings in the United States. Nvidia is a major competitor in global technology development, so China is expressing a form of soft power by limiting its control over the private technology sector in Asia. The actions taken by China are seen as a continuation of the current trade war occurring between the United States and China.

Link to article: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/china-nvidia-violation-antimonopoly-laws-nvda-stock/ China’s antitrust regulator announced recently that a preliminary investigation found that Nvidia is in violation of strict Chinese anti-trust and anti-monopoly laws.
