The deal includes measures to expedite mining permits, map geological resources, recycle minerals, and stop strategic assets being sold for national security reasons. Additionally, Trump affirmed support for the trilateral submarine deal under AUKUS with Australia and the UK, despite his administration’s earlier review of the pact.

This article is important because it highlights the U.S. and Australia’s recognition of the Chinese economic threat in the area of East Asia and Oceania. One important thing to note in this article is the fact that Australia and China have a very tense relationship. Australia wants to pull away from China because of security concerns and they align with the U.S. China is Australia’s largest trade partner in minerals, and this new deal with the U.S. puts a heavy strain on the relationship as Australia is looking to cut their trade reliance with China. This could have a lasting impact on the region because if China sees Australia pulling farther away than they already were they could see this as a threat. Australia will no longer need to rely on China for Earth minerals and can now focus on security because there have been many reports of Chinese spy planes flying over Australia.

China could respond to this event by continuing spy operations and they could look for new trade partners. The U.S. could respond to this event by using this new deal with Australia to broaden its area of influence in Oceania and continue to rival China’s sphere of influence in Oceania. Australia could respond to this event by cutting out its reliance on China for trade and pushing itself to be a power house in Oceania and East Asia.

This article relates to what we talked about in class by talking about the AUKUS which is an alliance between the U.S., U.K., and Australia. This could also be considered an IGO and would be a military IGO because it is a security pact to protect the Indo-Pacific area. You could also relate this article to Realist Theory because since the world is in a state of anarchy the U.S. and Australia allied with each other to pool their power and threaten China.

Link to article: https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/australias-albanese-discuss-rare-earths-security-first-trump-summit-2025-10-20/ At their first White House summit, U.S. President Donald Trump and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese signed a bilateral agreement to jointly invest $1 billion each in developing critical minerals and rare earths projects, part of a broader $8.5 billion pipeline to reduce reliance on China’s dominant supply and bolster Indo-Pacific security.
