Chinese President Xi Jinping has expressed his desire for stronger ties between China\u2019s Communist Party and Taiwan\u2019s Kuomintang party, emphasizing the \u201cone-China\u201d principle. In his message to Cheng Li-wun, the newly elected leader of the Kuomintang, Xi conveyed his opposition to \u201cTaiwan independence\u201d and stressed the importance of upholding the \u201c1992 Consensus\u201d. This consensus, reportedly reached between the two parties, affirms that both Taiwan and the mainland belong to \u201cone-China\u201d. Xi called for the two parties to unite the majority of people in Taiwan and protect what he referred to as the shared home of the Chinese nation. Cheng responded to Xi, expressing her gratitude and stating that the Kuomintang and the Communist Party should enhance cross-strait exchanges and cooperation to foster peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As I know that Taiwan and China have had very tense relations due to military activity, attacks on Taiwan, and economic pressure, seeing this news on a congratulatory message being sent from Xi Jinping to the new leader of the Kuomintang shocked me. China has always stuck with the \u201cone-China\u201d policy, which emphasizes that Beijing views Taiwan as a territory that is broken off and insists on eventually reunifying with Taiwan even if they need to force it. So when Cheng Li wun claimed to be pro-China in her campaign, I think Xi found hope in growing the Communist Party as their largest opposition party had expressed agreement. This message being sent can have lasting impacts because this can change China\u2019s power over and relationship with Taiwan, maybe even being a threat to the US and other countries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each stockholder involved, being Chinese President Xi Jinping and Taiwan\u2019s Kuomintang leader Cheng Li-wun, have already responded in surprising ways as Cheng responded to the congratulations message positively, stating that she would like to strengthen ties with the Communist Party of China. Both parties will be increasing cross-strait exchanges, which refers to interaction between mainland China and Taiwan over the Taiwan Strait, and they have also promoted peace. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This event directly connects to class because it\u2019s between global actors, a state and a stateless nation, who are building a relationship, one having power over the other. Through the levels of analysis, globally China can be a threat to other countries as they have this positive connection with Taiwan. In the regional level, China and Taiwan are creating peace on the Taiwan strait and domestically, the Beijing government is fulfilling the goal of the \u201cone-China\u201d policy and unifying. Lastly, on the individual level, Xi Jinping has hope of having ties with Taiwan. Lastly, China is a multipolar power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
