The “Chancay-Shanghai” shipping route has significantly boosted trade between China and Peru, handling 154,000 tonnes of cargo worth 3.97 billion yuan in the first three quarters of 2025. This marks a 56.9% year-on-year increase in Shanghai’s trade with Peru, reaching 13.42 billion yuan. Compared to the first half of 2025, the volume and value of goods transported have more than doubled, underscoring the route’s growing importance. A notable milestone was the arrival of the first shipment of goods for the 8th China International Import Expo via this route, including Peruvian alpaca dolls and pottery crafts. This development highlights the operational success of the new land-sea corridor across the Pacific, launched in late 2024. Chancay Port, a key Belt and Road Initiative project, is South America\u2019s first smart and green deep-water port. It has significantly reduced shipping times from over a month to about 23 days and lowered costs by at least 20%, strengthening trade ties between Latin America and Asia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As China is one of the largest powers and trading countries in the world, I understand that they have a lot of connections with several countries, whether it\u2019s South Korea, Japan, Russia, the United States, or any other common trading partner. The thing that stood out to me the most about this article was the trade between China and a country in the western hemisphere. And this is because China has begun trading with countries where the US is considered a regional hegemon. I think this type of trade opening can become another threat for the US from China, as the two countries compete over power, allies, and trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a stockholder, China is responding to this successful trade by opening easier trade and shipping routes that connect China to Latin America, which will open up more potential trade in the Western Hemisphere. The main appeal Peru has given China is their production of Lithium, which goes into creating batteries and China needs this for making cars and other things that are commonly produced in China. And Peru is reacting to this trade by cooperating and agreeing with the Chancay Port.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This event relates to class China and Peru have created reciprocity in order to receive their national interests. China is making more trading alliances using soft power in the Western Hemisphere. Since this is free trade between China and Peru, this relates to the liberal theory as these two states are working together and cooperating with each other leading to mutual benefits. Lastly, this event majorly effects the levels of analysis regionally because the US is now facing China in the Western Hemisphere as the US is Peru\u2019s greatest trading partner and ally.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
