Premier Li Qiang introduced expanding economic ties with Beijing as an alternative to the protectionist policies of U.S. President Donald Trump. Li Qiang said that signing the agreement would help overcome global economic uncertainties. His statements were met with skepticism by Philippine President Ferdiand Marcos Jr. Li said that there must be mutual reliance between China and the ASEAN members (Brunei, Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam). Officials have stated that the ASEAN-China free trade agreement is predicted to broaden integration across the region.

I believe that not all ASEAN members will agree with the trade pact. There have been disputes between China and the Philippines in response to Beijing’s plan to establish a nature reserve in the South China Sea. Further in the article, the Philippines President states, “Actions like these cannot hide under the veneer of marine environmental protection because they have no legal basis or effect, blatantly disregard international law, and infringe on the Philippines’ sovereignty.” Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei, and Taiwan all have overlapping claims with China over the South China Sea. I think that this trade agreement is increasing the tensions between the countries in the region.

This trade agreement would be beneficial for the region. The main stakeholders who have the power over this agreement are the ASEAN members. I think that they could eventually come to an agreement, but the shoal in the South China Sea has cultural ties connected to it, causing the Philippines to be more cautious in signing. Currently, the US and China are meeting in South Korea. I do not believe that the US will have much influence over the agreement.

The article discusses the IB Global Politics concepts of power and sovereignty. China is attempting to influence the other countries into signing the agreement, but ultimately the other ASEAN members have the power. Sovereignty is mentioned when the article discussed the disputes over the South China Sea. Each country believes they have sovereignty over the sea. The article also connects to development, as a trade agreement could foster economic growth.

Link to Article : https://apnews.com/article/asean-china-free-trade-trump-8a9d0f1ed5e87ebba4b5798275cd3605 On Tuesday, China signed a free trade agreement with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
