These tensions began recently after a comment made by the new Japanese prime minister Sanae Takaichi made a public announcement stating that should China take direct action to assert sovereignty over Taiwan, that Japan would take military action to defend Taiwan in response. This statement sparked a stream of statements by Chinese officials demanding she retract her statement as well as economic impacts. Chinese officials, who only as of two years ago allowed for Japanese seafood to be imported into the country again, threatened to impose a new ban following the statements. Additionally, after statements regarding the country there has been a massive drop in tourism and interest in tourism to Japan including many Chinese travel companies offering refunds for trips to Japan.

This is a very important event for the region because these are two of the major economic powers in this region. Should these two countries enter a trade war, like has been seen recently in other parts of the world, it would have significant impacts for both countries. This is especially true because of the water space the two countries occupy that therein affects the trade routes for many other nations. Japan is likely to struggle more significantly from an economic dispute such as this because, as the article notes, it’s more limited economy is already impacted by US tariffs and would likely have to seek to get those reversed in order to stand up to China.

Given the nature of the dispute this is not likely to be a one off comment and will likely escalate over time. Should a Japanese official make another statement such as this I could see even should China not impose a ban or sanction on Japanese seafood that should the government make a statement against the product Chinese consumers would stop purchasing it which would hurt Japan significantly. I think that Japan’s two options are either to concede and stop making more statements of this nature, or appeal to the US for greater support in standing with Taiwan against China.

This is very much a discussion of interdependence because the ability of Japan to continue to act in this way depends almost solely on the willingness of the United States to loosen their economic restrictions enough to let this happen. Should the United States decide to hold strong on their tariffs or even increase them in favor of garnering support from China then Japan will not be able to do this.

https://www.nbcnews.com/world/asia/china-seeks-inflict-economic-blow-japan-escalating-spat-taiwan-rcna244555 This article discusses current geopolitical tensions between China and Japan.
