As well as Papua New Guinea’s first security pact from an alliance standpoint. Under this treaty, both countries have committed to back each other when under armed attack. In addition, the treaty paves the way for a symbiotic military integration as seen in new joint training and interoperability through land, sea, and air. For Australia, the agreement cements its role as principal security partner for Papua New Guinea and extends their authority into the Pacific Ocean. Canberra views this alignment as an important step in countering Chinese influence within their region, especially with China’s diplomatic relations with Pacific island states. Furthermore, Australia has formed plans to modernize Papua New Guinea’s defense capacity and overall security. As for Papua New Guinea, they continue to gain benefits in defence and international standing, while maintaining their sovereignty and territory. More importantly, this pact gives Papua New Guinea citizens the freedom to join the Australian Defence Force and other Australian initiatives. This freedom further entangles the personal ties between both countries. However, the treaty has provoked unease with China as it undermines their previous control within Papua New Guinea themselves. Beijing sees the pact as part of a boarder strategy of Australia’s to condemn China’s power over the Pacific. Moreover, some voices within Papua New Guinea’s government express worry over their sustaining sovereignty, questioning whether this alliance may compromise their freedom to cooperate with other powers. Along with this, Papua New Guinea’s prime minister insists the treaty was formed out of shared geography and history rather than with motives of control. By formalizing the alliance, these nations have reshaped the regional security by bothering Pacific stability and boxing out other countries from asserting as powerful dominance as they could have. Signaling that Australia remains committed to the defensive position of their region and that of their neighbors. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
As of early October, 2025, Australia and Papua New Guinea solidified a historic milestone by signing the “Pukpuk” Mutual Defence treaty, marking this as Australia’s first new alliance in over seven decades.
