T\u00fcrkiye and South Korea recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to deepen cooperation in nuclear energy, announced during South Korean President Lee Jae Myung\u2019s visit to Ankara. The agreement, inked by KEPCO and T\u00fcrkiye\u2019s nuclear energy authority, aims to forge a joint working group focused on reactor technology, site evaluation, regulatory procedures, financing, and business models. Importantly, Seoul is positioning itself to participate in T\u00fcrkiye\u2019s still-planned second nuclear power plant in Sinop, on the Black Sea coast. Beyond energy, the two leaders also committed to expanding strategic ties in defense, infrastructure, and advanced technology, highlighting the MOU as a key step in building a long-term, mutually beneficial partnership. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

South Korea and Turkiye\u2019s new MOU on nuclear-energy, defense, and green-tech ties marks a turning point in deepening historic ally relationships. This is rooted in Turkey’s Korean War support, turning it into a future partnership. By cooperating on Turkey’s planned Sinop nuclear plant, Seoul supports their global export footprint while Turkiye strengthens energy diversification and sovereignty. It’s more than economics, a joint defense production that builds long term industrial capacity. In the past, Turkey has searched for advanced nuclear partners beyond Russia. This deal has the opportunity of reshaping Eurasian energy and security architecture, it gives both nations a headstart and aligns their ambitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both stakeholders can respond by reinforcing their core strategic interests. Tyrkiye can leverage their partnership in order to accelerate their nuclear program, strengthen their defense, and reduce their dependence on energy, while framing this deal as proof of their growing relevance. South Korea can use this agreement to expand their high tech exports, showcase their nuclear expertise, and build influence into a region spanning across Europe and the Middle East. European states might reassess their own strategies regarding energy and partnerships to remain competitive. Russia or Iran may counter shift alliances and protect their own energy influence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This directly connects to the security policy that we learned about in class because of the principle of their behavior. They are both trying to advance and come to an agreement while still clashing heads. It also relates to international security overlap because this is the start of an agreement between bilateral lateral levels. More so, this reaches the international environment, currently South Korea and Turkiye are in a heated disagreement, both thinking they are in the right, they are trying to cool the waters in between by signing the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
