It marked a major upgrade for an under equipped fleet. These vessels are the first in Philippine service that feature a vertical launch system, it is capable of firing modern surface to air and anti ship missiles which greatly enhance Manila’s maritime defense through the rising tensions in South China Sea and the Chinese activity. Part of a $550 million contract from 2021, the frigates are central to the Philippines broader military modernization under their Archipelagic Defense Concept, which includes improving their surveillance, missile capabilities, and cooperation with allies such as the U.S. and Australia. HD Hyundai is also building six offshore patrol vessels and might even expand future cooperation. Another South Korean firm, Hanwha Ocean, has sparked the idea of supplying submarines. This modernization aims to give the Philippines a disincentive against China and their growing naval powers.

South Korea’s delivery of advanced frigates to the Philippines is significant because it shows a major shift in the region’s balance of power and Manila’s growing urgency to counter China’s maritime coercion. In the past, the Philippine Navy has trailed its neighbors, acquiring warships that were equipped with vertical launch systems representing a jump in capability and deterrence. This development also strengthens the ties between Seoul and Manila, signaling that the middle powers are increasingly cooperating to manage China’s assertiveness in the South China Sea. Over time, these upgrades could upgrade the regional defense networks, reduce strategic vulnerability, and push China to recalculate its strategies.

I think the Philippines could integrate the new frigates into their Archipelagic Defense Concept, expand their joint patrols, and invest in crew training so that they can maximize the ships advanced systems. South Korea may use this success to keep power in their ties, offer maintenance or technology transfers, and pursue future submarine deals. China could respond diplomatically by looking out for increasing militarization. The United States and Australia can strengthen interoperability with the Philippines to reinforce deterrence. ASEAN members could encourage building confidence and recalibrating their own security stances.

This directly connects to class through a multilateral approach. The Philippines and South Korea are using this approach against China in the conflict over the south china sea. It includes states and allies working together to fight as one against China. It also follows the Rimland Theory, fighting over a sea for ultimate control on where the Philippines and South Korea are strategically planning for this fight. Whoever wins will have the power as the ocean opens up avenues that are not seen on land.

12/12/2025 This article describes South Korean shipbuilder HD Hyundai Heavy Industries delivering 2 advanced HDF-3200 guided missile frigates, BRP Diego Silang, to the Philippine Navy.
