Yesterday, an unmanned Chinese drone flew into Taiwanese airspace. The drone was there for 4 minutes and is a model WZ-7 which is otherwise known as a Soaring Dragon. This drone violated the airspace of a Taiwanese island called Pratas and is the most recent escalation by China into Taiwan. It reportedly flew at an altitude which was outside of the range of Taiwanese air defenses and thus was left unharmed. This act highlighted the struggle Taiwan faces with China’s superior drone capabilities. Additionally, this is an example of China pushing further to violate Taiwanese sovereignty.

This article is very important because it is designed to inform the reader of a recent event that happened. I think that this is an important next step for the region, specifically the conflict between Taiwan and China. This conflict is especially important for the region because it is not only these countries involved but also Japan, Korea, and the US as well as many other countries who all play significant roles in this should a conflict begin to form. This event is in my own opinion the result of tension between China and Taiwan for a number of years that may finally boil over in the near future.

I think that at this point there are so many ways each stakeholder can respond. For example, Taiwan is in a position where they could reasonably take no action and wait to see if it happens again, which it likely would. They could make public statements threatening repercussions which would probably begin a slow but noticeable escalation. Or they could take direct action in a few ways. China right now is probably going to continue to push the envelope to see how far they can get before there is any direct response, if there is a direct response then I could see China taking that as an opportunity to begin military action.

This instance connects to many class concepts first being the topic of sovereignty. Some argue that by flying the drone into Taiwan’s airspace that China has violated Taiwan’s sovereignty. However, it is also arguable that in fact Taiwan has no sovereignty whether its because of lack of recognition or because it is part of China. Additionally this touches on the idea of what defines conflict or the idea of negative versus positive peace as while there is no active military action that is a clear and reasonable possibility.

https://www.ft.com/content/4b73bf1c-76a4-426f-a335-de8528b24acb This article discusses a recent incident taking place in Taiwan.
