The drills they implemented included warships, aircraft patrols, and communication exercises. These efforts were to improve coordination between these allied forces and occurred within the Philippines Exclusive Economic Zone to strengthen regional security and allied foreign influence. This military cooperation follows rising tensions in China which claims a majority of the South China Sea even while rulings from the 2016 international summit rejected their ownership. The Philippines has increasingly participated in partnering with other countries to protect its maritime interests and deter Chinese expansion in that region. Thai collaboration demonstrates strategic alignments among the US and its regional allies and shows the importance of maintaining a navigable Indo-Pacific alliance. Additionally, this highlights how the region is becoming a central arena for geopolitical competition between these two hegemonies; US and China.

This event is important because it demonstrates the growing militarization of the Indo-Pacific region. The South China Sea is one of the most strategically important channels in the world die to the trillions of dollars of trade passing through frequently per year. Increasing military cooperation aids the United States and its allies efforts to deter Chinese expansion and maintain majority control of this critical region. China has, historically, attempted to control these disputed waters and islands which has created tensions with its neighbors, more specifically, the Philippines and Vietnam. These drills and naval activity could strengthen their efforts to prevent Chinese influence but risks escalating tensions especially if China perceives this as an effort to contain and limit their sovereignty.

Stakeholders:

The Philippines may continue efforts to strengthen alliance and continue to expand defense cooperation to deter Chinese activity. The US is likely to maintain a strong military influence and naval presence to protect freedom of navigation and strengthen relations with regional allies. Japan could further expand its security role in the region. China, however, may respond aggressively by expanding military presence and influence on islands and waterways and increasing naval patrols. Additionally they could begin using diplomatic pressure to discourage foreign military activity and using soft power techniques to regain control over that region. IGOs, NGOs and geopolitically interested nations could encourage diplomatic dialogue to prevent naval and military escalation.

This event connects strongly to IB GP concepts such as power, sovereignty, and interdependence. China’s actions in the South China Sea reflect attempts to expand geopolitical influence and regain control resources. Meanwhile, the Philippines emphasizes sovereignty and its right to control its Exclusive Economic zone.

https://www.scmp.com/news/china/military/article/3338769/china-japan-military-tensions-what-lies-ahead-2026 This article discusses the joint naval activity from navies of the Philippines, Japan, and the US in the South China Sea.
