The Chadian government attributed the attack to forces operating from Sudan, where fighting continues between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

In response, Chad sharply increased its security posture by reinforcing troops along the border, closing crossings, and warning that it may carry out retaliatory operations داخل Sudan. The attack follows a pattern of violence spilling across the border, as Sudan’s conflict—ongoing since 2023—has repeatedly destabilized neighboring regions and displaced large populations.

The strike highlights the growing regional consequences of Sudan’s war, demonstrating how internal conflicts can evolve into broader security crises. Chad’s reaction signals rising tensions and the potential for direct interstate confrontation if cross-border attacks continue. Overall, the incident underscores weakening border control, increasing militarization, and the risk that Sudan’s civil war could expand into a wider regional conflict.

Despite Chad’s efforts to curb the War from their country, including shutting down their eastern border entirely, the effects are still spilling into their country. When violence crosses borders, a civil war begins, turning into a regional conflict. Chad intends to entrench itself along the border and take control of border crossings. The army also ordered the evacuation of thousands living along their border. Most concerning, the office of the Chadian president, Mahmat, Idriss Deby, said he had ordered the army to retaliate against any attack from Sudan. Where the conflicts become further ambiguous and dangerous, is both the RSF and Sudan’s army blame each other for the attack.

The risk is that the RSF, Sudan’s army, or Chad could launch preemptive attacks at any time. Chad has acknowledged innocent people will continue to be targeted, and if it already knew this, why now evacuate citizens from their border? This is not the first drone strike against civilians, but Chad is increasing efforts to ensure it’s the last. The risk of regional conflict is escalating, and Chad may bring in regional partners to fight forces in Sudan.

In class, we discussed how, no matter how tyrannical, strict, and disliked a government is, the most important variable is protection. If citizens do not feel safe, the government’s legitimacy substantially drops. Therefore, Chad has to reassure civilians of their safety and take action to preserve its legitimacy and enforce its sovereignty.

Article 3: Reuters A Reuters report details a deadly escalation of Sudan’s civil war as a cross-border drone strike killed at least 17 people in Chad, including civilians attending a funeral.
