The JF-17 aircraft is a jet Pakistan developed in partnership with China. The article describes the aircraft as lightweight and more efficient than the Pakistani army’s current aircraft, stating that it was built in order to significantly develop Pakistan’s military infrastructure. According to the article, multiple states such as Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Libya, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh and North Africa have expressed interest in buying these aircrafts or purchasing defence packages that include a significant number of these jets. Additionally, the article states that the JF-17 are starting to play a more significant role in the region, giving Pakistan and China power in the region. The article states that the development and sale of the aircrafts poses a threat to India as it gives Pakistan and China significant military power in the region and has contributed to many important alliances.

Because military capability is a major indicator of a country’s power, India has expressed serious concerns regarding the development and sale of the JF-17 aircrafts as it helps Pakistan, China, and surrounding states develop their militaries which could be a threat to India. The addition of these aircrafts could become a great advantage for developing nations and shift the balance of power in the Indian subcontinent according to realism theory. Further, because only some nations in this region can afford to add these aircrafts to their military, this might cause other developing nations to feel threatened and begin developing their own military inventory, which could lead to tension and possible instability in the region.

Pakistan and China will likely continue to invest in the development of military infrastructure in order to improve their military capability. Other countries in the region might respond by further investing in their military inventory to compete with regional powers. This might create tension and instability in the region by heightening the security dilemma and causing states to be in a constant state of preparation for possible conflict or threats. Because three major powers in this region- Pakistan, China and India-are not allies, there will likely be no collaboration in security, therefore, the JF-17 aircrafts will continue to act as a threat to non-alliances of Pakistan and China, causing possible instability in the region.

This issue showed realism, a theory which states that the power of a state can be seen in military capability. This can be seen in the shift in the reputation of Pakistan and China, specifically Pakistan, from a developing country to a country with a potentially powerful industry and military. Additionally, this issue is an example of the security dilemma, a concept stating that the military power of one state might threaten and prompt other states to develop their own military in the name of security, however this will in turn threaten the other state which was not actively improving its military. This cycle can be seen in the relationship between India and Pakistan, where India might feel threatened by Pakistani military infrastructure and invest in their military.

Article: https://indiasworld.in/a-strategic-signal-why-pakistans-jf-17-has-entered-the-regional-conversation/ The article discusses the role of the JF-17 aircraft in Pakistan and China’s standing in the global landscape and what the increased trade of the jets implies for regional relations.
