During a Philippine resupply mission to the Second Thomas Shoal, Chinese coast guard ships allegedly rammed Philippine vessels and even threatened sailors with weapons. China, however, claims that the Philippines acted dangerously in waters they consider their own. This conflict is part of a larger, ongoing dispute over territory in the South China Sea, despite a 2016 international court ruling that rejected China’s claims. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr has taken a stronger stance than his predecessor, stating that the Philippines will not give in to any foreign power. Public support for this approach is high, with many Filipinos backing both diplomatic and military actions to defend their sovereignty. The article also shows how civil society groups are getting involved, further reflecting strong national support.

This article highlights how easily a conflict can arise, especially when both countries involved believe they are in the right. I see why China wants to continue to push to complete the tasks they have set forth in the South China Sea, but it seems that they may be taking too much of an aggressive approach which is causing retaliation from the Philippines. I back what the Philippines are trying to do since they see the importance of staying strong as a country, ensuring their sovereignty. In the long run, if this conflict continues to build, it could create huge instability within the South China sea, possibly causing other countries to get involved.

The Philippines could act by continuing to strengthen its military and placing patrol around their borders to ensure protection for their country. It seems that this is likely and they could also bring in other countries like the United States to push China away. China could keep pushing its claims which they will probably do, but possibly act less aggressively to ensure safety. Surrounding countries may become more involved if this conflict continues to grow.

This connects to class because it emphasizes the idea of crimes of aggression and how the Philippines viewed China as invading their sovereignty. There is a lot of dispute over whose territory the water actually belongs to, creating mixed views. Either way, many believe that China should have acted so aggressively whether or not the Philippines were truly in Chinese waters. China may have overlooked human rights, not considering what would have happened to the individuals on board the vessels especially since it seems that the Philippines weren’t aware they were being attacked or that they were in Chinese waters. Overall, this conflict could grow rapidly if nothing is done to stop it or define certain territorial lines within the seas.

Link to the article: https://iwpr.net/global-voices/philippines-push-back-over-chinas-south-sea-actions The article discusses rising tensions between the Philippines and China over the South China Sea, especially after a violent confrontation on June 17.
