The bridge is a kilometer long with two lanes and is built to handle up to 300 vehicles a day in an attempt to expand trade and economic ties beyond the already existing railway link. Construction initially began in 2025 following a 2024 agreement between Kim Jong Un and Vladimir Putin with the goal of expanding trade between the nations.

By constructing a bridge across the Tumen River North Korea and Russia are making permanent steps to expand their economic and strategic partnership. This is particularly important because in 2025 China accounted for 98% of North Korean external trade, these new steps between Russia and North Korea to expand trade means that North Korea will now rely less on China. This also solidifies the military partnership between both nations with them now being able to more easily make military exchanges during the war in Ukraine.

All in all the bridge will allow North Korea and Russia to facilitate tourist travel, military exchanges as mentioned above and move small amounts of freight. The construction of this bridge also affects China a lot, China will most likely begin to more closely monitor the Tumen River region in an attempt to remain as North Koreas primary economic partner as well as ensuring border security. South Korea and the many major world powers will also probably increase satellite surveillance over the bridge in order to monitor what’s moving over the bridge and look for potential transfers that violate UN sanctions.

The construction of this bridge demonstrates realism because both countries are acting in their own self-interest to boost national security and trade. It also shows bilateralism, because two sovereign states created a direct agreement to build physical infrastructure, allowing them to strengthen their regional power.

Link to article: https://apnews.com/article/russia-north-korea-ties-bridge-cars-38e5c393aa8a41d27516f3fdb4496b26 Russia and North Korea officially opened a bridge connecting the two countries across the Tumen River.
