Japan is acquiring notable amounts of Uranium and is starting to gain attention for how much Uranium they are increasingly consuming. Kazakhstan, on the other hand, is showing interest in expanding their technology in Uranium and may be attempting to get that information from Japan, however, Japan is unlikely to comply because of the fact that there are many legal restrictions made by the International Atomic Energy Agency that stop that information from being released.

My take on the article is that many countries are showing interest in Uranium including Japan, and with this increasing interest Kazakhstan has the chance to become a much more powerful state. This is important since lots of countries import Uranium from Kazakhstan and if Kazakhstan acquires the atomic knowledge of Uranium manufacturing they may want to alter trade policies. which could cause global issues. In the future this could mean that the region would be under threat from powerful countries like Russia. If pressure is put on Kazakhstan the region could suffer economically and socially because of their close ties to Russia and disobeying them would not lead to heavy conflicts between the two countries. The lasting impacts of Japan shopping for Uranium in Kazakhstan is that it could relieve the pressure of mining and finding Uranium within its own country, having a positive long lasting effect on the region’s ecosystem. I think that Japan came to Kazakhstan for Uranium to help build its nuclear industry and because historically, they have not found success finding it within its own borders and even lost a shipment of Uranium from Germany in the 20th century so they will be adamant in the Kazakhstan Uranium deals working out.

The Uranium Industry has multiple stakeholders. I believe that the Kazakhstan government is not too keen on fully relying on Uranium exports for its country, their government wants to expand their own Uranium industry instead of being a raw resource export country. I think that Japanese and Russian governments are happy that the Uranium industry is available for them and that Kazakhstan is agreeing with trading its Uranium. Kazakhstan’s Uranium industry “Kazatomprom” is interested in supplying to countries like Japan, however, they are not jumping at every opportunity since the Uranium process takes time and is valued globally so they could take business elsewhere.

This article directly correlates to what we discussed in class about LDC’s since Kazakhstan is being mostly used as a raw materials country, which is common in poorer countries. Their government is trying to escape from it but it can be tricky when multiple MDC’s are competing for your country’s resources. This article also explored the ib themes of state Sovereignty because Kazakhstan is making their own economic and trading decisions that they think are best for their own countries without another country directly controlling them.

link to Article : https://iwpr.net/global-voices/japan-comes-shopping-kazak-uranium This article is about Japan visiting Kazakhstan to further discuss terms of trade on the mass amounts of Uranium that Kazakhstan has.
