South Korea will host the upcoming 2018 Winter Olympics in the city of PyeongChang, 30 years after hosting in Seoul. During the Olympics, President Jae-In hopes his ‘audacious’ plan will succeed, with hopes of bringing ‘peace and reconciliation’ to the two sides.

Despite the increased nuclear threat North Korea poses, Jae-In’s plan seems very plausible. As Moon stated, the 1988 games had at least some impact on the Cold War coming to close by bringing together nations throughout Asia and the world. In hopes for the same sort of reconciliation, Jae-In and the International Olympic Committee are working to produce wild-card slots, due to the lack of qualifying North Korean athletes. North Korea boycotted the games in 1988, but there is optimism that won’t be an issue this time around.

It is noted that both the nations of Korea have a rich past in sporting competitions. They regularly meet in friendly football matches and then Asian Cup. Following the 2018 Olympics, East Asia will host the next two Olympics: Tokyo in 2020 and Beijing Winter Olympics in 2022. If all goes according to plan, PyeongChang will serve as building block towards peace in East Asia, and both Tokyo and Beijing could be pivotal to securing some form of reconciliation after the seeds of harmony are planted this upcoming winter.

This is one of best ways to create peace that comes to mind. Every 2 years, an Olympics is held and hundreds of countries come together and find a common ground through athletics. During moments of companionship and sportsmanship, bonds are born and serve as gateways between individuals, nations, and regions as a whole. From Jesse Owens and Luz Long to Rafer Johnson and CK Yang, the Olympics has constantly brought people together and in my opinion nothing else could serve as a better platform to reunite a broken Korea after this long time coming.

Following Donald Trump’s threat of reigning terror on North Korea, South Korea President Moon Jae-In would rather take a different approach.
