McCain and USS Fitzgerald were crippled by collisions with merchant ships earlier this year.<\/div>\n<div class=\"el__embedded el__embedded--fullwidth\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">The reports, from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.usni.org\/2017\/10\/12\/navy-surge-uss-monterey-uss-okane-bmd-operations-cover-ships-sidelined-collision\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">US Naval Institute News<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2017\/10\/12\/navy-to-send-destroyer-to-far-east-to-boost-ballistic-missile-defense\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Navy Times<\/a>, said the USS O&#8217;Kane would deploy from Hawaii to join the ballistic missile defense mission in the Western Pacific.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">Experts say the Aegis system could be used to shoot down North Korean missiles sent toward Guam or US bases elsewhere in the region.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">The Navy tested the system on Sunday, with the destroyer USS Donald Cook successfully intercepting an intermediate range ballistic missile during an exercise in Europe.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">The test by the Navy&#8217;s 6th Fleet came during exercise Formidable Shield with NATO allies.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">The test showed &#8220;the capabilities the US and our allies are developing to defeat complex, cruise and ballistic missile threats,&#8221; US Missile Defense Agency Director Lt. Gen.
