It’s also been steadily working on its<br \/>\nmissile capabilities, firing 22 missiles during 15 tests from February to mid-September.<br \/>\nEven as other countries have urged caution, dialogue and reciprocal confidence-building measures, Trump has<br \/>\nbelittled the North Korean leader as “rocket man,” dismissed Secretary of State Rex Tillerson’s eorts<br \/>\nto broker a<br \/>\ndiplomatic solution, and hinted that he is ready to take military action.<br \/>\nAsked at Thursday’s event about the threat posed by North<br \/>\nKorea, McMaster said that Trump will not accept a nuclear<br \/>\nNorth Korea that threatens the US, putting the administration<br \/>\nin a “race” to resolve the increasingly tense stando<br \/>\nbefore it<br \/>\ndevolves into a military confrontation.<br \/>\n“He’s not going to accept this regime threatening the United<br \/>\nStates with nuclear weapons,” McMaster said. “There are<br \/>\nthose who would say, well, why not accept and deter. Well,<br \/>\naccept and deter is unacceptable.”<br \/>\n“So this puts us in a situation where we are in a race to<br \/>\nresolve this short of military action,” McMaster said.<br \/>\n“Everybody knows it. Trump<br \/>\nisn’t helping on that score, he said.<br \/>\n“You have two leaders of the two major protagonist countries<br \/>\nthat are hurling these broadsides back and forth, and they<br \/>\nhave a lot of personal political face involved in it,” he said.<br \/>\n“I don’t agree that the tack that Mr. Trump has taken is a<br \/>\nconstructive and productive one,” Brennan said, calling the<br \/>\nreferences to “Rocket Man” and other insults “irresponsible.”<br \/>\nMcMaster praised Trump’s handling of the crisis, saying that<br \/>\nthe President’s leadership had created the possibility of an<br \/>\n“unprecedented level of international cooperation on the<br \/>\nissue.”<br \/>\nHe also praised Tillerson’s eorts<br \/>\nto increase international<br \/>\npressure on North Korea, which has moved some countries to<br \/>\ncut diplomatic relations with Pyongyang, expel its<br \/>\nambassadors and in some cases, ban North Korean guest<br \/>\nworkers.
