These two words in specific, “nuclear power” have the potential to touch millions of lives in two drastically different ways, one of destruction, the other being providing the most efficient way of fueling our lives. The more common association that is formed, is the darker, more grotesque use that can become of this power- Death and Destruction. On August 6th, 1945 an American B-29 bomber dropped the first atomic bomb, its target- Hiroshima. Instantly 80,000 people turned to ash, several tens of thousands more due to radiation poisoning.

In an instant, quite literally, the fate of the world was changed forever. Since this point, the science of harnessing nuclear fusion has spread across the globe, enabling many many countries to harness this great power, whether for “the good”, or “the bad.”

One of the most recent examples of the importance behind this issue, is North Korea’s fifth, and largest nuclear test so far. While International sanctions continue to pile atop North Korea’s economic systems, the communist nation remains belligerent as they continue down the ‘weapons of mass destruction’ lane. This most recent test, in which North Korea boastfully announced that this was a successful test of a warhead that could mounted onto rockets. This warhead, held what is estimated to be 20-30 kilotons of force. The bomb we dropped on Hiroshima: 12-18 kilotons.

The brazen testing of these weapons from North Korean is cause for serious alarm, especially for the nearest neighbors to North Korea. Of these neighbors, the largest assumed target would be South Korea, a bitter enemy of the north, after long standing tensions and war. Additionally, China, one of North Korea’s only allies, is fearful of these tests- less of an impending attack, but the possibility of North Korea provoking a war on their doorstep.

All of these factors lead to ever growing tensions brewing in the east Asia region.

Nuclear Power.
