Because of these threats on the founding values, the European Union has decided to apply Article 7 of the Treaty on European Union, which entails the European Union to suspend certain rights from a member state. The Prime Minister of Hungary called this action a insult to Hungary and it’s people and the Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto calling it “nothing less than the petty revenge of pro-immigration politicians”. The EU has to have all 28 member states agree in order to take away Hungary’s voting rights, however, Poland and Bulgaria are member states of the EU that have openly expressed their support towards Hungary.

I believe that Hungary should have an open border to any immigrants, especially those coming from war torn countries and fleeing from violence. In my opinion, I think that you should not close borders on people that are seeking safety. While Viktor Orban retracted his statement about all immigrants being a threat and dangerous, I fail to believe he did it for any other reason other than keeping up his image and reputation. While the Prime Minister has been calling immigrants a threat, Hungarian officials have been caught throwing food at starving refugees on the Hungary – Serbia border. In 2015 during the refugee crisis a video came out of a Hungarian journalist kicking refugees and Hungarian authorities used tear gas and water canons on refugees, including young children. This treatment of any human being is absolutely disgusting. I always thought of Hungary as a country that didn’t have many problems and was never a big issue but after reading and educating myself more on what has been happening in recent years in Hungary I am asking myself why this isn’t a big deal and being discussed more. Unfortunately, because Hungary is nowhere near being a global power our government does not care as much, and because our government is focusing on “more important” issues our media follows what is happening with the United States and what the government deems “important” to which the media focuses on whether they agree or disagree. Things that happen with countries of less importance get brushed off because we don’t benefit, therefore it “doesn’t matter”, which I think is a sad way to view things. I think the EU should temporarily take away Hungary’s voting member status, it is a privilege to be able to vote and Hungary should focus on what is happening within the country and the people trying to get in before it starts worrying about anything else.

Recently in the news, Hungary has been accused of attacking the media, minorities, and the rule of law.
