They have no life jackets and are traveling in darkness in a vessel made of plastic and rubber. Also, the migrants have to leave so much up to chance when they risk their lives crossing the Mediterranean. They have to rely on the water being calm enough and the wind being strong enough to push them across. The boats are so packed with people sinking or suffocating is a definite possibility.

I think what the aid workers are doing is truly remarkable and commendable. That is not an easy job to organize the transfer of people from their original boats and make sure the boats don’t capsize and that no one falls in. The sheer size of people they take control of is overwhelming.

For me this puts in perspective how severe the migrant situation in the Mediterranean is. It seems like more boats and assistance are needed because so many people are fleeing. It also makes me think that despite the danger of the crossing, at least these people have the opportunity that those in landlocked countries lack. This massive exodus could help those who stay in Africa by increasing the availability of resources.

I am shocked that these migrants are brave enough to travel in precarious boats just at the chance of a new start.
