The attacker was a 45-year-old IT specialist who had worked for the Paris police force for 16 years. He was shot dead by an officer inside the building’s courtyard. The attacker stabbed three people with a knife as well as two women in a stairwell. The motive of the attacker is still unknown, although a colleague believes “It was a moment of madness.”

Since the start of this year there have been over 50 suicides by police officers. This is believed to be a ramification of increasing violence towards police in addition to strenuous working conditions. On Wednesday the first mass police strike in France since 2001 occurred in protest of extended working hours, resource shortages, and the controversial pension reforms. According to Le Parisien newspaper, officers are owed 23 million unpaid overtime hours.

Weekly “yellow vest” protests opposing President Emmanuel Macron’s Green Tax on fuel often turn violent. This has placed a strain on french police both mentally and physically. Officers have accused the government of failing to defend officers against recurring brutality, particularly from the “yellow vest” protesters. Several acts of violence have occurred including an attempt to set fire to a police car with two officers inside, seriously injuring them.

Discontentment within the police force appears to be on the rise. The French government’s apparent lack of concern for police officer safety is troubling. Rising suicide rates are a clear sign of distress among officers. A change needs to be implemented in order to spare officer’s health, especially amount “yellow vest” protestors.

Although Macron’s initiative on the climate crisis is virtuous, the green tax on fuel is solely denying those who can not afford the fuel prices. There are preferable methods of addressing climate change that do not distress such a predominant group of citizens. This increase in violence has negatively impacted the police force. Clearly officers have been overextended, as demonstrated by the recent attack within the police department.

A day after the recent police strike in protest of the increasing violence towards officers, an employee of the Paris police force killed three police officers and an administrative worker at the police headquarters in Paris.
