With the withdrawal of US Troops from Syria, Russia has now been given a chance to widen their influence in the Middle East. The Kurds need for protection consequented in ceding control of their territory over to the Syrian troops and Bashar al-Assad. These negotiations were actually held inside the Russian air base in Syria. Of course, hidden in this agreement is extreme Russian influence, as Russian troops now patrol the border.

With a history of secret US and Russia collaboration, it might be possible that the US strategically pulled out of Syria to let Russia in. The United States military staying in Syria was simply no longer in their national interest and posed as an unnecessary threat to America lives. President Erdogan accepted the Russian offer to meet in Moscow. Russian’s Middle Eastern influence may now take the heat off of America and onto the backs of the Kremlin.

Russian and European presence is also threatening to the nationalist culture of countries like Hungary, who are a target for Syria refugees. Turkey has threatened to release thousands of unwanted refugees onto European lands if they don’t stop pushing for sanctions and various punishments on the Turks.

The long term question is will Syrian Kurds ever gain back autonomy, or will they stay under the control of Damascus and now Moscow?

Russia’s attempt to severe tensions will be a test of Russia’s power versus the United States.
