The EU has decided to add sanctions on more officials that have been said to have a part in creating the border migrant crisis. The sanctions will be put on more than 30 Bearus officials and companies. The EU and NATO leaders have introduced the sanctions after President Lukashenko was accused by the IGO’s of using migrants as “hybrid warfare”. While Minsk denies these accusations, the use of the “hybrid warfare” would be enough of a legal basis to invoke sanctions onto the participants. Over 200 sanctions have been placed on Belarus officials and companies, some of which include President Lukashenko and his sons, the airline belavia, and the company BelarusRE.

I think that the sanctions that have been put in place are very fair. Lukashenko has been in power for too long and the human right abuses that he has done are irrevocable. The sanctions put on by the EU will cover a wide variety of things which will limit the effects the government will have on the citizens. If the new sanctions are put on Belarus officials that spurred the migrant crisis, it could affect how the crisis plays out in the long run. I also believe that with these new sanctions, though the old ones did not affect Lukashenko’s power too much, these could have an exponential effect on his power. Limiting his economic span and power of the people.

This article relates to the class because the EU and NATO are IGO’s. Belarus could be breaking international law which causes the states in the EU and NATO to deal with international security. Mutually assured destruction is evident in this situation, since the sanctions were put on Belarus by the EU which Poland and Lithuania are a part of, Belarus has decided to “destroy” Poland and Lithuania by flooding the borders. The EU is also using the main type of power: Economics, by putting sanctions on officials and companies. Military power: though this is more for the states in which the migrants are fleeing to, they are using Military power by adding more troops to the border.

https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/exclusive-eu-close-deal-new-round-belarus-sanctions-diplomats-say-2021-11-09/ As the border crisis goes on with Poland, Lithuania, and Belarus escalates.
